Leadership Guide in Islam — The Example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

·8 min read

Our Prophet (peace be upon him) is the eternal example of morality, devotion to Allah, forgiveness, and leadership through consultation. As emphasized in Sabah and Yeni Şafak sources, His leadership combines charisma, legitimacy, and spiritual power.

The Eternal Leader: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

As Nihat Hatipoğlu stated in Sabah newspaper, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the eternal leader with his ethics, kindness, forgiveness, and complete devotion to Allah. He was a compassionate leader who treated even those considered untouchable as equals. Similar to the lessons Yasin Aktay drew from the story of Talut-Jalut in Yeni Şafak, leadership in Islam is built upon charisma and legitimacy; our Prophet is the supreme example with divine legitimacy.

Leadership Qualities of Our Prophet

Qualities compiled from İslamveİhsan and Sorularla İslamiyet sources:

  • Justice and Mercy: He treated everyone equally and stood against oppression. Ali Imran 159: 'Be gentle, consult, and have Tawakkul.'
  • Consultation and Deliberation: He consulted with his companions in his decisions, emphasizing collective wisdom.
  • Patience and Determination: He continued his call tirelessly despite pressures in Mecca and established a state in Medina.
  • Honesty and Trustworthiness: Known by the titles 'Al-Amin' (the Trustworthy) and 'As-Sadiq' (the Truthful); he kept his word.
  • Being an Example: He lived in poverty, setting an example for his companions; he rejected luxury.

Spiritual and Political Leadership

He demonstrated political leadership by establishing a city-state in Medina: he united different faith groups with the Medina Charter. He was at the forefront in battles (Uhud, Trench) and showed forgiveness in victory (Conquest of Mecca). This is the pinnacle of empathy and inclusivity sought in modern leadership.

Application to Daily Life

Lessons for today's Muslim leaders: Consult, be just, show mercy. As Sabah and Yeni Şafak emphasize, the Prophet's leadership brings both spiritual and practical success. If you apply these qualities in your personal life, family, and workplace, you will become an effective leader.

Final Word

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sent as 'the most beautiful example' (uswa-e hasana). Leadership is not about power; it is a trust managed with justice, love, and Tawakkul in Allah. Those who follow his path will succeed both in this world and the hereafter.
