Divine Love — How Does Love of Allah Grow Through Dhikr?

·8 min read

Transition from worldly love to divine love: The love of Allah in the Quran and Hadith, purifying the heart through Dhikr, and increasing affection. Dhikr illuminates the heart, bringing love and tranquility.

Love in Islam: A Journey of Divine Affection

In Islam, true love is to turn towards Allah and to love Him. The Holy Quran states: 'But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah.' (Al-Baqarah 165). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Faith is to love Allah.' Worldly love is fleeting and temporary; the true love is the love of Allah. This love grows in the heart through Dhikr and worship.

How to Attain the Love of Allah?

As emphasized in the sources of our religion, Islam, loving Allah begins with knowing Him. As Ma'rifah (knowledge) increases, Muhabbah (affection) increases. Dhikr roots this love in the heart:

  • Regular Dhikr: 'Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar' 33 times each after Salah.
  • Reciting the name 'Ya Wadud' (O Most Loving): It places the love of Allah in the heart.
  • Consultation and Du'a: 'O Allah, grant me Your love and the love of that which will bring me closer to Your love.' (Hadith). Dhikr purifies the heart from worldly love; it fills with the love of Allah.

Benefits of Dhikr on Love and Affection

As compiled by Islamveİhsan, Dhikr heals the heart:

  • Illuminates the heart, brightens the face.
  • Removes sorrow and grief, brings comfort.
  • Increases the love of Allah; love is the spirit of Islam.
  • Drives away Satan, blesses sustenance. It becomes a bridge from worldly love to divine love: fleeting loves are made a means to the love of Allah.

Application in Daily Life

  • Establish a morning and evening Dhikr routine: Ayatul Kursi, Ikhlas 3 times.
  • Send abundant Salawat: Love for the Prophet increases the love of Allah.
  • Perform self-reckoning: Stay away from forbidden loves. One who regularly performs Dhikr feels the affection of Allah in their heart; this is the highest love.

Spiritual Warning

The love of Allah requires obedience: to do what He has commanded and to avoid what He has forbidden. The path that begins with Dhikr continues with love; it fills the heart with Allah. One who lives with this love finds both peace in this world and salvation in the hereafter.
